Website costs

Write Expression offers you the option of buying a WordPress package, with various add-ons if you need extra services, or paying an hourly rate.

For a very simple basic site, a package should be fine. For more complex websites, including e-commerce sites, an hourly rate is better.

WordPress package

For maximum flexibility, we recommend using wordpress.org. The software is free, but you pay for your own domain name (varies, depending on the domain name, but starts at around £10 a year) and pay to host the site somewhere.

You have a wide choice of free designs (themes), which we can customise,or you may choose to pay for a premium design. You can also add extra bits of software (plug-ins), many of which are free, which provide greater functionality.

The package includes:

  • an initial consultation
  • three website pages
  • a written personalised step-by-step guide on how to change and add information and pictures to each of the pages
  • two months of support by email or phone after the website goes live.

Not included:

  • Domain name registration
  • Hosting
  • E-commerce
  • Copy writing

If you want the theme to be modified substantially, there will be an extra charge for this.

Maintenance and upgrades

Once your site is set up and you have your instructions, the idea is that you should be able to add new copy, images and pages yourself. We offer two months of free support after the site goes live to help you with any questions or problems. After this, we charge £30 an hour, with a minimum charge of £30.

As with all computer software, WordPress and its associated plug-ins are constantly evolving and upgrading. Upgrades may fix bugs and security loopholes, so they are important – the unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca (the “Panama Papers”), is thought to be due to the company not updating its WordPress software for three years.

Updates may also introduce new features that change the way you do something – for example, uploading images.

If you would like us to do take care of all the updates on your site for you to ensure that you have the latest version of WordPress and any plug-ins, this costs from £100 a year.

In addition, if you would prefer us to run the site completely, updating content as well as software, we are happy to do that.

Other services

  • If you have an existing website that you’d like to convert to WordPress, we can do that. And we can keep the old site running while we build the new one – so there will be no break in service.
  • If you already have a WordPress site but would like some refresher training in how to update it, we can provide that.
  • We can also set up Mailchimp electronic newsletters, Twitter accounts and Facebook pages – contact us if you’re interested.
  • Our standard hourly rate is £30.

Payment

Payment is by cash, cheque, PayPal or BACS transfer. A deposit of £50 is required up front, refundable if you are not happy with the final result. The balance is payable within 14 days of the website going live or receipt of training or a written guide, whichever is sooner.
